About Me
Imagination and storytelling have always been important to me. I was the girl with her nose stuck in a book, who loved to write stories and act in plays, a musical theater geek long before Glee. My favorite childhood memories are of creating art projects with my mom, and playing make believe with my brother and the neighbor kids in the vast outdoor kingdom of our rural small town. In high school, if I wasn't onstage I was behind the scenes directing or making sets, costumes and props for every school play. I loved the visual element of storytelling, and enjoyed my art history class so much I decided to memorialize it in my high school yearbook by photoshopping myself into the Mona Lisa.
I tried growing up — lived in New York and Paris, graduated from Harvard Law School as an Editor of the Law Review, worked at a big law firm in Washington DC and even clerked for a judge. In my early thirties, when starting a family turned out to be more difficult than my husband and I had expected, I looked to photography as an artistic and therapeutic outlet. Photographing children and families gave me a glimpse of the life I so desperately wanted, a touch of the magic I’d been missing. I created my first “official” imagination portrait, Super Reading Girl, in late 2014, inspired by 8-year-old Jasmine’s self-portrait as a superhero. Looking back, I realize that I connected so strongly with that image because I saw in it my own childhood self.
Today, as a mom of three young children, I know firsthand the challenges and joys of this busy, messy season of life. I’ve been there, with aching feet, at the end of a long day of work, chores, errands and activities, so tired I don’t remember falling asleep in the nursery armchair. I’ve felt how hard it can be to enjoy those fleeting make-believe moments with little ones, much less preserve those memories in a way that lasts. The things that consume our little ones today - their obsession with dinosaurs, endlessly role playing Little Red Riding Hood, or shouting Frozen songs at the top of their lungs - loom large in the moment, but pass quickly and fade as they grow. After all of the sacrifices and hardships it took to get here, I don’t want to miss out on the best part of parenthood. And neither do you! That’s why I created Imagination Portraits and Storybooks. I love that I can use my experience as a parent and skills learned from theater, art history, and photography with my love of make-believe to help parents connect with and nurture their kids' creativity and self-confidence. I'm committed to helping you capture your kids' wildest imagination and preserve their childhood magic for a lifetime.
